Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery is pleased to present timefolding by
Mitzi Pederson running from March 23rd through April 21st, 2007. An opening reception will be held on Friday, March 23rd from 6-8 pm.
Mitzi Pederson creates sculptures and work on paper that play with ideas of perception and space, as well as tension and suspension. Using organic and synthetic substances including wood, acetate, and magnifying plastic, Pederson’s minimalist sculptures possess an underlying sophistication and thoughtfulness to their construction.
For the exhibition, the artist has built new sculptures from lattice wood and acetate to attempt, in her words, “to bend standard material in a new way.” The use of reflective paper in some of her works creates the appearance of more space, while also provoking the imagination and memory. As the title timefolding indicates, the theme of the exhibition is the ways in which moments of time sometimes seem to collapse into each other. Thus, the word “reflection” is both a literal and metaphorical point of departure for Pederson, who also presents trace-line drawings that echo the contemplative forms of her three-dimensional pieces.
Mitzi Pederson was born in 1976 in Stuart, Florida. She received a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1999 and her M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing at the California College of the Arts in 2004. Pederson is a recipient of the 2006 SECA Art Award, in conjunction her work is currently on view at SFMoMA. She has had solo exhibitions at Ratio 3, San Francisco, White Columns, New York and Duchess, Chicago. Her work was included in group exhibitions at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, New Langton Arts, Ratio 3, Jack Hanley Gallery and Marella Arte Contemporanea in Milan, Italy. Pederson lives and works in San Francisco.
