Helter Swelter

Reception: June 1, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Oliver Kamm/5BE Gallery is pleased to announce
Justin Lowe’s New York solo debut gallery exhibition. For this summer long show, Lowe has reconstructed the architecture and environment of the gallery to bring the city indoors.
The exhibition consists of three site-specific installations, which recreate popular metropolitan, summertime places of refuge, icons of annoyance, and backdrops for those heady moments that occur with more consistency as the city’s temperature rises.
The gallery’s entrance is transformed into a bodega-front, with its extreme color overload, blaring imported music and questionable refrigerators - a classic drug front. At this point the gallery becomes a façade, and marks the beginning of more moments of disorientation and surprise as things aren’t quite what they seem.
A revolving door leads into a temporary sidewalk construction sight, with its shoddy, warped wood and posters advertising concerts, festivals and movies that you would only pay to see in order to spend two hours in an air conditioned theatre.
Once outside the construction site an 18 Foot Kool Man Ice Cream Truck is revealed, a sweet haven on wheels, and another classic drug front, this time accompanied by a collaborative soundtrack.
Oliver Kamm/5BE Gallery is located at 621 West 27th Street, on the ground floor. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11-6. After July 4th we will be open Monday through Friday from 11-6.
Art Reviews of Helter Swelter
New York Times July 7, 2006 | | Roberta Smith | | "...But the fastidious re-creations preclude the sculptural invention and weird recycling of materials that are among Mr. Lowe's strengths. Only when you get to the padded floor does this extravaganza begin to feel like his work. Until then, it is just one more, extra-labor-intensive, walk-in variation on Meret Oppenheim's fur-lined teacup, a frequent pitfall of late that Mr. Lowe has previously avoided...." |
TimeOut New York July 6, 2006 | | Martha Schwendener | | "...In Lowe’s case, however, the results are tricky: While his execution is nearly flawless, the point of this exercise in verisimilitude is unclear. Lowe’s bodega is convincing enough that only art-world insiders (who, admittedly, are the ones populating this patch of 27th Street) will be in on the joke, understanding the space as an artwork and not a place to pick up El Diario or play Pick 5...." |
Village Voice June 29, 2006 | | Jerry Saltz | | "...If Lowe's installation needs a bit more inner tension, its outer skin is impeccable...." |
The New York Sun June 22, 2006 | | David Grosz | | "Don't be surprised if you do a double take upon entering Oliver Kamm/5BE Gallery. For his New York solo debut, the installation artist Justin Lowe has transformed the gallery's front room into a realistic facsimile of a corner bodega...." |
