Onishi Gallery is proud to host a show featuring
Masako Inkyo and
Yukie Uesaka, two artists whose work realize the Gallery’s mission to introduce the public to rare and exciting Japanese traditional arts and crafts normally seen only in Japan.
Masako Inkyo is a calligrapher currently residing in New York City and teaching at the Japan Society. Her 2005 solo show at
Onishi Gallery entitled “Discovery of the Moon – A History in Calligraphy” exemplified the delicate interplay of her traditional writing and art: “The contrast between Inkyo’s writing and what it rests on is always maximized…In her playful and poetic parody of an actual encounter with the moon’s surface, Inkyo has left her marks on it. These, it goes without saying, are not footsteps but the beautiful characters of her calligraphy” (www.onishigallery.com). Please visit

Yukie Uesaka is a Kaga-Yuzen artist from Kanazawa city, Japan. A designer of beautiful kimonos and sashes in Kanazawa, Uesaka has also brought her talents to the U.S., most recently in a 2005 solo show at the United Nations entitled “Silk Patterns: the Yuzen Paintings of
Yukie Uesaka.” Challenging modern conceptions with traditional technique, “her works play out the sheer exhilaration of bending the materials used – silk, pigments, water – to a use they are hardly equipped for: the creation of colorful, vibrant, and complex design patterns… blended in such a way as to persuade the beholder to question his initial perceptions”
