Unity and Isolation

The
Onishi Gallery is pleased to present the two-man exhibition Unity and Isolation by
Hideto Imai and
Shinichi Nakahata. Comprising drawings by Imai and an installation by Nakahata, the exhibition opens on Tuesday, February 26, and continues until Saturday, March 8.
Imai, born in 1968 in Japan’s Mie Prefecture, has exhibited extensively in Japan and Italy. His offerings in Unity and Isolation consist of drawings on paper in charcoal produced from shopping receipts. The drawings highlight the commonplace in their images and in their materials. For Imai, the charcoal is an artifact of the receipts, which are in turn a record of the unfolding of daily life, and the drawings are thus an affirmation of life itself.
Nakahata has exhibited in Italy, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan, as well as in Japan. His installation at the
Onishi Gallery, dubbed Spiral, consists of cotton thread, sumi ink, newspaper fragments, and other materials. Nakahata reports that he discovers something of himself in both pastoral and urban settings and explains that he has opted for natural materials in his installation to express that sense of commonality.
