555 W 25th StP·P·O·W is delighted to announce our third show of sculptures by Jill Levine.
After her extensive travels to ancient Mayan temples and Aztec pyramids for over a dozen years, Jill Levine incorporates the carved reliefs and Pre-Columbian codices on to her dynamic new sculptures. Mounted to the wall, each piece juts out, articulating an abstract sculptural space in forms that are clustered with bulbs, cones, spheres, loops, disks, cylinders, tumescent points and mobius strips twisting into each other. Over these complex geometries Levine paints an inexhaustible profusion of detail and color. The shapes and dense colors of Mexican sculls and death gods stretch like a skin upon the hard surfaces of each form giving them a cartoon-like flatness that is a leap from her previous work of Hindu deities.
Each piece is a clash of abstract ideals. Rather than relying on the religious significance or symbolism of the cultural artifacts employed, Levine is interested in their excess of gesture, color, pattern and figure. Appling the patterns on an intuitive basis, Levine’s works become both a playful yet menacing push of the eye around the sculpted form. The painted leap from flatness to sculptural and back breaks each work into fractured cubist articulations. At other points and at certain angles the jutting molecular surface of the sculpture and density of the paint meld into one impossibly flat surface.
Jill Levine attended Yale University and the Royal College of Art in London. She has been exhibiting since 1977 and in 2000 she was the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship.
