PH Gallery is pleased to present "BRAINBOW"
Mike Geary's first solo
exhibition with the gallery featuring the paintings, prints and collage
from past five years.
Geary’s works deal iconic imagery, which appear as cartoon like form
with psychedelic pattern and colors. He often uses the brain pattern in
his work to depict a head of imaginary creatures. This realistically
illustrated grotesque shape stands out from bright colored fantasy
space, but the playful items such as a hat, pipe and hands on brain
lumps connect cartoony - flatted background together. At the same time,
the images like black rains, red bread, skull shaped and muscle-texture
of creatures’ elongated arms promote the fatal impression. These creepy
figures, suggest the portraits of the subversive generation in our
contemporary society and the flat background implies their
subconscious, which are influenced by popular culture.
As a founder of Skulking, a noise music band, Geary sometimes apply his
imagery into square canvas. Record album covers inspire his center
focused composition and decorative fringe along the flame. He also
produces unique imagery by painting and collage over actual album cover
and transforms mass produce record into the original and personal one.
For this exhibition, we also display some of his silkscreen prints made
as flyers for a music show.
Born 1977 in Boone, North Carolina, Geary lives and works in New
Heaven, Connecticut and graduated from School of The Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston in 1999.
