Paul Sharpe Projects presents "
Arturo Guerrero: Works on
Paper from Egypt" with a reception on Thursday, September 20th from 6 to 8
PM at 547 West 27th Street, Fifth Floor. The show will be on view now
through October 20th. The opening reception will be hosted by Banfi wines,
courtesy of Banfi and The New York Sun.
The works on view feature oil paintings on paper created by the artist in
2002/2003 after he traveled to Egypt for three weeks. In his characteristic
style, the paintings incorporate architectural elements, the moody and
evocative effect of atmosphere, and the abstraction of the artist's
impressions of this ancient land.
The artist visited Egypt in late 2001. With the decrease in international
travel at the time, the Egyptian landscape was desolate. The stark beauty
of the country's flora and monuments come through in two primary symbols,
the palm tree and buildings typical of the region. Notably absent are the
obvious: Sphinx, pyramid, and hieroglyphics.
Although the artist cites Matisse, Morandi, Motherwell, and Picasso as
influences, his work is truly his own. It is architectural, earthy, and
sublime.
Guerrero first showed with
Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art in 2001. The artist
subsequently has shown with various galleries worldwide, including solo and
group shows in Florida, New York, and Virginia as well as Barcelona, Spain.
Guerrero, born in Madrid, lives and works in New York City.
