Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art presents "
John Rosis: Variable Dimensions." In his fourth solo exhibition with PSCA, Rosis has created a series of unique prints on archival paper for Paul Sharpe Projects in Chelsea. This is the artist's first exhibition of prints. All of the works in the show are monoprints, created by combining various dimensions of printmaking techniques including woodblock, embossment, intaglio, and collography.
According to Rosis, "I was deeply moved by Edvard Munch's woodblock prints that I saw last year at the Munch Museum in Oslo. In such works as Two Women on the Beach (1898) and The Kiss (1902), Munch had removed extraneous imagery to allow the color and surface impression of the woodblock to take over as subject matter." Rosis uses the grains of the woodblock as a point of departure in these prints which include organic shapes that complement the texture of the woodblock technique.
Rosis' paintings, works on paper, and reverse paintings on glass were included recently in group shows at the Holter Museum of Art and at Albright University. He was included also in faculty exhibits at Rockland Center for the Arts and Westchester Community College. A painting by Rosis was featured on the cover of the Carnegie Hall Playbill in May of 2007.
