Julian Lethbridge 2007
March 24, 2007- April 28, 2007
534 W 21st St
The
Paula Cooper Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by
Julian Lethbridge opening on 24th March and on view through 28th April.
Informed by the vocabulary of abstract and minimal painting,
Julian Lethbridge’s work draws on naturally occurring forms such as spider webs and thickets, while still maintaining a connection to the modernist grid.
Continuing his characteristic exploration of surface, line, and texture, Lethbridge’s new paintings are infused with vibrant and rich color. Lethbridge’s approach is an additive one, beginning with a grooved and gestural base that is overlaid with subsequent applications of paint, creating a rich physical atmosphere. These paintings investigate the relationships between space and depth; absence and form; emotional improvisation and calculated gesture.
Born in Sri Lanka and brought up primarily in England,
Julian Lethbridge received his education at Winchester College and Cambridge University. Lethbridge lives and works in New York City and Connecticut. His work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States and Europe and can be found in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), The Tate Gallery Contemporary Art Society (London), The Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago), and The National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.). In 1988,
Julian Lethbridge was awarded the Francis J. Greenberger Award.
Art Reviews of Julian Lethbridge 2007
New York Times April 13, 2007 | | Bridget L. Goodbody | | "Writing about abstract painting is like trying to slice an atom: with 50-plus years of history, differences among artists can be hard to describe. Julian Lethbridge keeps the dialogue fresh, all the while reminding viewers of the pleasure to be derived from looking at paint on canvas...." |
