Jean Genet said, “There are things that happen to you when you are younger that provoke either so much pain or so much curiosity that you spend the rest of your life trying to figure them out, and for some people this turns them into artists.” Barr believes that this understanding, voiced by Genet, continues to sustain her spirit. She feels that all the artists who join her in this exhibition endure and continue to make art that is honest.
Paula Barr is the celebrated photographer of the New York Icons’ series. Her work is in the collections the Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library and the Brooklyn Museum. Barr has exhibited worldwide including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art. In the present exhibition she is showing her the early paintings from 1975.
