PAVEL ZOUBOK GALLERY is pleased to announce the opening of IN CONTEXT: collage + abstraction, a large-scale survey of abstract collages by fifty-five modern and contemporary artists, including Hannelore Baron, John Evans, Arturo Herrera, Conrad Marca-Relli, Robert Motherwell, Louise Nevelson, Anne Ryan, Amy Sillman and Dodi Wexler. Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, June 1, from 6-8pm, or during the run of the exhibition, which continues through August 10.

Bringing together the work of over fifty modern and contemporary artists, IN CONTEXT: collage + abstraction explores the medium of collage within the broader context of non-objective painting and drawing. Drawing upon modernist traditions, such as Constructivism, Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, collage remains a viable medium with which artists explore divergent vocabularies as an extension of the abstract impulse. Working outside of the constraints of representational art, the artists in this exhibition employ a broad range of materials (both found and fabricated) and visual strategies to create a transcendent aesthetic. Representing almost a century of abstract collage, these artists reflect the influential position collage occupies within the canon of non-objective art.

IN CONTEXT: collage + abstraction will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue with an essay by curator and art historian Robert Hobbs.
