BAM SPLIT LAB AND THE AFRO FUTURISTIC UNDERGROUND

Perry Rubenstein Gallery, 527 West 23 Street, is pleased to present BAM SPLIT LAB AND THE AFRO FUTURISTIC UNDERGROUND, the first solo exhibition of
Adam Pendleton since joining the gallery. The exhibition will consist of approximately fifteen paintings that will wrap around the interior of the gallery, and five large-scale works. The paintings function as conceptual manifestations connecting design, architecture and experimental writing.
Adam Pendleton's silkscreen on canvas paintings employ diverse methodologies to investigate and re-contextualize media based imagery. Approached as multi-disciplinary hybrids, Pendleton's paintings serve as conceptual objects that represent the questions of identity, location, space, context and appropriation surrounding both contemporary and historic imagery. Pendleton's work imparts documentation, research, and design to reconfigure the nature of social, political and cultural contexts, ultimately breaking down the time-fixed and static nature of visual art.
Pendleton directly approaches both text and image, and while neither abstracting nor allowing for domination of either, he balances the two and generates his own edifice. The objectification of language and imagery of mass media speaks to an interconnected culture while emphasizing the individuality of experience, knowledge, and a distinctly informative space. Pendleton’s fascination with architecture and historic events creates a sense of displacement in these works; he investigates the broader implications of history and the uncertain future for the contextualization and framing of information in a post digital, post information age.
Pendleton has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S., notably at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston and The Studio Museum in Harlem.
