Hope CarterContemplating the Frail Intensity of Red (installation detail) (2006) |
In this most recent installation I invite the viewer to participate in an intellectual and emotional process of meditation and contemplation.
The work consists of mixed media works on the floor and on the gallery walls. Small splashes of vibrant red relieve the otherwise overwhelming darkness of the individual pieces. The tension between the black of the textured wool, chain, screen and painted canvas and the red of the fragile thread and small painted fragments imparts a vitality to the work, as does the careful placement of each piece in relation to the white fields of the gallery walls, its opposing peers and the central floor piece.
The creation of an interactive environment is still one of my paramount interests, but in this piece I have changed my point of reference from a physical environment that fills the gallery space to a more introspective landscape. Metaphors are abundant and will vary with the individual input of each participant, but the dominant theme remains – the power of a small focus of color to transform and control a potentially overpowering whole.
