Hyom Kang
Small Courtyard for teatime (installation detail) (2006)
Hyom Kang represents what she has been doing and feeling in her life for the mental and physical refreshment, through natural installations.

Most of her installation elements are very familiar part of our human life but they are changed little by her unique imagination to become more hopeful.

Though these are fantasy moods which may not come true or exist in this world, they are worth being desired by many people.

Hyom Kang not uses sounds, video projection and even scent in the natural installations in order to better communicate her concept allows the viewer to experience something inside her installation pieces by the each theme and then she wants to share the feeling with viewers, both adults and children.

For example, she installs a tea room with many large branches with tea bags hung like a forest; viewers can pick a tea bag and make a cup of tea to enjoy, as if they picked fruits.

Otherwise, she installs an instrument such as a piano or a xylophone in the nature or indoor installed woods, which viewers are allowed to play them.

In one work, she made a narrow path between indoor woods with a video animation of an early morning mood and moving shadows of foot steps were projected on the path. At the installation, viewers walked along the path with the animation shadow steps. It talked about a morning walk for refreshment. She installed a bathtub in the calm forest with cozy display, though nobody bathed in the forest during the show, the viewer could place themselves in the kind of atmosphere for bathing in the work and nature.

Though usually her pieces have been installed indoors by bringing the trees inside, in other cases, the works have been installed outdoor. The important thing in her art is that she represents and provides the viewers with the cozy mood and something hopeful for refreshment of mind and body.
