Richard K. Deon Statement
The title “Oeuvre” means a work of art; the sum of the lifework of an artist, writer or composer.
I have been interested in film since I was very little. I remember going to see my first film on my own way back in 1981. Going into an old RKO theater and watching Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits” I was entering another universe. From then I was hooked on cinema and the medium where stories, characters and vision and voices were created and expressed.
I have been making films since taking my first intro to film production course at NYU in the summer of 1991. I’ve taken mostly history and theory classes in college. I made two student shorts which are in my oeuvre to show a progressive development in my film maker approach. These two shorts reflect common signatures or aesthetic preferences on my part. I’ve also loved every genre in film and want to be a versatile and prolific artist. In the summer of 1996 when I was at USC I found myself caught in a dilemma. I had a story in mind but not the full cooperation and support to make my film. That film actually later turned out to be “kismet” the third short to my oeuvre thus far. “In dreams” was a fortuitous diversion of happenstance. I decided to give myself certain parameters which would be an interesting challenge. Since I wasn’t given license to do “kismet” at the time I deferred to shoot film on things which captured my eyes attention and to figure out a narrative or means of stringing these images in some manner through editing. Editing is wonderful process because the ideas hopefully materialize and come to motion. My intention with “In dreams” was to capture the creative process in each and every aspect.
Since 2000, I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from simply doing. I think that’s the best school, the school of life. These are where invaluable lessons occur through experience. “kismet” was truly a personal labour of love as are each and every project. Each film is an extension of one self. “kismet” means fate or fortune. I tried to tackle concepts that I truly believe in and wish to continue to explore.
In 2001, I was asked to help out with another short film called “Three of a Kind”. It was a different kind of film in comparison to the other film projects I had made but also an interesting challenge. It would be a straight forward narrative with the chance to employ quick cuts and montage sequences. I worked on as a film consultant because of my prior experience with “kismet” and primarily as the editor of the film.
In 2004, I made “Forgotten” in three consecutive days… That was also a very interesting moment in my life for personal reasons. Nevertheless it was completed in time to be exhibited in Korea. This past winter 2005 I found some additional footage and went to back changing the film and also re-titling the film into “The Waking”.
In 2006, I plan to put these films to rest or in the can. I’ve taken them as far as I possibly can. I am ready to move on to new and better projects which will hopefully give me insight to my being and condition in this lifetime. I feel blessed for this opportunity to marry all the works thus far and have the forum to display them. Thank you for taking the time and interest to these fleeting reflections of me. I hope to see you with new stories in the near future.
