Point of View Gallery is pleased to present the photo exhibition of
Tamir Sher’s one-person show entitled “AFTER MARS.”
The photos that make up the current show “AFTER MARS” refer to someplace that is far away and cannot be reached. Struck by the images taken by the recent space probe to Mars, Sher decided to make his own planetary photos of his hometown, Tel Aviv. His work is consistently based on familiar images, which are then manipulated and served up in a new light. The works explore the impact that cycles of light and dark have on everyone’s lives. The photographs encompass both day and night and the stark contrast between the two.
In the first series of photographs, the sky is thick with darkness. In one of the photographs Jerusalem’s El Aksa Mosque erupts out of the blackness, appearing suddenly from past and future alike. Sher’s photographs create a new view of science fiction. His visual perspective challenges our views. In Sher’s photos it is no longer a question of how a creature from another world appears in the eyes of mankind, but rather how we appear to them. Sher uses a cosmic perspective in order to observe the private intimate universe, thereby making a distinct critical statement about the place where he lives.
Sher’s photographs manage to simultaneously tell us about a world capable of changing completely (in the first series, MARS) and about the moments of wonder in view of that change (in the second series AFTER MARS). In the second series, Sher takes scenes from childhood, the moments of wonder and amazement at the world – removes them from their romantic background and gives them an intimidating touch that is both sublime and innocent. Light floods these candid shots, presenting each child as otherworldly and one that humanity may depend on as a potential savior.
Artist’s Statement:
“In my work I aim to subvert the basic rules of photography by forming a visual contradiction between visible fact and fiction. My wish is to create work that allows the viewer a new way of understanding and interpreting phenomena. With my photography, I really ‘take’ the pictures to my studio and then start to work on fresh representations.”
Process:
The pictures were taken with a medium format camera. Shot on film, Sher first works from slides and then alters them to redefine the photo.
Bio:
Sher was born and raised in Israel and currently lives in Tel Aviv. He grew up on a Kibbutz in Northern Israel, named Kfar-Masarik where “there was no privacy.” He studied photography at Camera Obscursa in Haifa and for three years was a photographer in the Israeli army. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at Hertzlia Museum, Limbus Gallery and Gal-On Gallery in Tel Aviv. Group exhibitions include Tel Aviv Museum, Jerusalem Artist House, Ashdod Museum, and American University in Washington D.C. among others. His work is included in several private collections. This is his first solo exhibition in New York
