In RARE PLUS,
Jeff Lutonsky presents new works on paper in his first solo exhibition. Titled Ain’t Livin’ Long Like This, his show, which takes its name from a Waylon Jennings’s song, submerges the viewer in the atmosphere of the often-overlooked sub-cultures of NASCAR and the rodeo. Lutonsky’s portraits of these worlds’ inhabitants expose the emotion and energy behind lives well lived. Confronting the strict stereotypes attached to the “red neck” ideal, the viewer ultimately finds beauty and peace in the toughness of rural living.
The artist’s rebellious style of drawing expresses a refusal to conform; at the same time, it is true to the beauty and awkward details of his native South. Somewhere beyond the Wal-Marts and strip malls, there is a “simple” life loaded with quirks and complications that beg to be studied. Employing images and souvenirs from road trips to NASCAR races and rodeos, Lutonsky depicts the under-respected members of these sub-cultures with equally under-appreciated materials such as magic markers, plywood, and auto body paint.
Lutonsky was born in 1974 in Lawton, OK. While growing up, he divided his time between working on his father’s farm and at his mother’s local restaurant. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1998 with a degree in French, though he learned everything he knows about art from a country song. He currently lives and works in New York City.
