In RARE PLUS,
Ryan Kitson presents new sculpture and works on paper in his solo debut, entitled Eye Donor. His work is inspired by our collective visual language only to be compressed, stretched, and distorted with the formal concerns that other artists have faced in the past. Within these long-established motifs, the questions of what we are instinctively attracted to on an aesthetic level are being compounded by the artist’s attempt to simplify, distill, and ultimately resolve into the most basic of forms. In Plank and Ball Pieces (2007), the standard grocery store inflatable play ball is being unrealistically suppressed/supported by a bent plank-stick with no regard to the laws of gravity. This creates an unsettling composition in the simplest of terms that cannot be passed off as mere opaque abstraction. In Big Pearl Project: Scratch Pad Prints (2007), marker test pads taken from art supply or stationery stores are scanned at a high resolution and reprinted on rag paper at a larger scale. For Kitson, the collective subconscious can be a beautiful thing and particularly engaging when its byproduct seamlessly blends with the practice and presentation of abstract painting.
