RARE is pleased to announce Second Sight, an exhibition of new paintings by
Christopher Mir. In each of the seven works on view, Mir develops highly distinct spatial relationships in order to examine some of reality’s more metaphysical incongruities. In them we find figures occupying dimensions, not only of spiritual and psychological ether, but also of something inexplicably cosmic. This compounding of time/space with various energies/forces/histories/narratives evokes – perhaps most vividly – the twisted logic of a waking dream. And yet, because these paintings have less to do with Mir’s personal life and more with perception with a capital P – all the images are appropriated from various media sources – it would be a simplification if we did not entertain the prospect of a more anthropological concern.
Perhaps on their most basic level, each painting approaches convergence. In Day One (2006), the three figures – one female, two males – have accumulated like driftwood upon a rocky coast. Here, amid the shore’s desolation, in muted grays and blackish browns, where possibly the end of civilization reverts back to a makeshift spiritual crossroads, the only trait the figures share is their common survival. As wanderers, castaways or outcasts, each amplifies one another’s dislocation by being a hair shy of near. Why does Mir insist on this cagey proximity? How do issues of language, or communication, complicate and/or resolve all that untidy space between them?
Frequently Mir, who studied anthropology in college, wonders aloud about the look and feel of parallel existences. He supposes that, in them, guardian angels bump into souls as casually as neighbors on their way to the mailbox. Typically, bursts of clarity occur simultaneously within our physical world. Mir refers to these episodes/ visions/ symmetries as synchronicities, and his ability to access them with more frequency as Second Sight.
