In RARE PLUS, architect
Ryan Jorgensen and industrial designer
Jasper Pope warm up the coldest, shortest month of the year, February, with Summer Comes Early. Like summer camp projects for hipsters, their designed objects are on the margins of function and their sculptures imply a warped utility. The duo attempts to solve the conundrum of how the tension between the designed object's yearning for function and the art object's aversion to interaction can be brought together into one experience, coupled with their twisted sense of humor. In Birdfeeder, a fishhook and worm are attached to an L-shaped piece of metal that can be placed on almost any surface. The utilitarian design solves the problem of finding the most elegant, efficient and simple solution to feeding a bird while the art of the piece creates an entirely new set of psychological problems.
