521 W 26th StIn RARE PLUS, Hugh Lippe presents The Dirt Under My Nails, an exhibition of new photographs. In an attempt to synthesize his rural background with his current metropolitan surroundings, Lippe contrasts his more straightforward, almost journalistic approach with subtle, tender implications in order to evoke something like a void. As a result, the “tone” of the photos can come across as deadpan or ironic. Yet, ultimately, irony is not the key to these thoroughly contemporary works. Following that vein would lead us away from Lippe’s conscious attempt to humanize incompleteness. This is Lippe’s second one-person exhibition at RARE.
