Remy Toledo Gallery/ Projects is pleased to present an exhibition of three
women artists “Between Body and Language” featuring
Graciela Fuentes, Sara
Modiano and
Monika Weiss.
Multi-media works presented in this exhibition explore the private and public
feminine body and its relation to language and meaning.
Graciela Fuentes’ cprint
images “Habitaciones (Rooms)” explore the domestic space of 10
individuals, their private spaces projected in body parts. Her video installation
“Saida, Asra”, focuses on two young girls as they dance during a family event .
Her work brings to the unsuspecting viewer an insight into the metamorphosis of
the dancers from girlhood to womanhood as they cross this threshold filled with
self awareness.
Sara Modiano’s sculptural installation “Me, Myself and I”, part of a series called
“Encounter with the Soul” employs the artist’s face hidden inside a module which
through multiplication creates a voluminous sculptural photograph that
simultaneously entraps and explodes beyond itself, exposing the brink of
presence and absence.
Monika Weiss’ video projection “Fall-Keimai” is based on several minutes chosen
from many days of her intimate video performance where the artist repeatedly
covers her body with leaves, and is accompanied by a soundscape that the artist
composed from the sounds of falling leaves. Her diptych “Leukos” also evokes
the sense of solitary immersion in foreign media. The image of the body and
self is altered and partially erased as a way to present the void of being here and
being absent simultaneously.
