The Enchanted Island and Other Recent Works
March 8, 2006- April 15, 2006
Reception: March 10, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
529 W 20th St
THE ENCHANTED ISLAND, a temporal installation, consists of thousands of paper cup sand castles arranged in a grid pattern in the gallery's rooms. The installation eventually will be dissolved by the artist. Mr. Betancourt presented a related installation/photo performance work during Art Basel Miami Beach, 2004. Images from this photo performance and other recent photographic artworks by the artist will also be exhibited.
The Enchanted Island, a temporal installation, explores the artist's attraction to the momentary, to that which exists and may be gone, alluding to our own physical existence and search for order. The artist's work also reflects on the relationship that links man and nature in a communion that can not be separated. His color compositions intuitive and spontaneous, simultaneously humorous and researched are loaded with multiple layers of meaning that may be wrapped in ritualistic and primordial mysteries assembled in a magical marriage between the past and the contemporary.
