Rhonda Schaller Studio is proud to present Abstract America: works in process, from April 4, 2007 through May 22, 2007. On display will be large panel assemblages of oil pastels on paper and oil paintings on unstretched canvas. Schallers work presents a modern aboriginal feel to her psychological and theological abstractions.
During the months of April and May 2007 Schaller invites us into the gallery as her studio, where we witness the abstract artist at work. An open studio in a gallery setting, where each visitor may sit with the artist as she works, have a cup of tea and find their own sense of meaning and inspiration in the symbolism. Schaller, like a beacon of light illuminates lifes rugged terrain with purpose, articulating the invisible processes of the universe in shape and color which is at the heart of her subject matter.
We see in Solitude, Evolving soul, and The Lords of Winter (Divine Beings) an illustration of the intrinsic connectedness her work has to the poetry of spiritual means and meaning, exemplified in the ancient teachings, as well as the poetics of visualization.
She has traveled extensively over the last 25 years throughout Asia and Greece, and we find the influences of the sacred sites in her shapes and sensibility as seen in Orange Altar: Rebirth, and Kapala. She is an artist for whom process holds an enhanced spiritual and visual meaning, a painter thought of as both a painter and a healer.
The textures of her canvases are deep and varied. Her work develops slowly and through layered accumulation of color and intent; her tools are her consciousness, her hands, her palette knife, and her fingertips.
Schaller states: Although there is a methodology and a sustained aesthetic, each painting represents a meditation for me, a journey into an unforeseen landscape and destination. I work for months on many canvases, usually working on three at a time. When I arrive at a finished piece, it is always a surprise, holding within it elements of both controlled specificity and channeled chaos.
