Ricco/Maresca Gallery is pleased to present the
ethereal, archived “stone” drawings of Philippe
Weisbecker. After two spring visits to Spain in 1996
and 2004, Philippe has compiled the findings of his
walks along the beach in Cadaquet, a village in
Costa Brava, Spain. The resulting images are illustrations
and social commentaries in the form of
renderings in graphite and colored pencil on paper
notebooks. Simple in subject matter, his drawings
represent the everyday. His stones of cement, brick
and rock, paradoxically, are isolated -- potentially
to be found at any given time or place -- yet
strangely familiar. Weisbecker documents the remnants
and ruins of structures that were built by the
local people of Costa Brava, abandoned, found
again and morphed into soft, floating objects.
Evidenced by his light, careful pencil strokes,
Weisbecker handles each drawing with the touch of
a man respectful of the history and stories held and
carried in each fragment, treating them as precious
artifacts. He says they, “...are witness to a more
human time scale. They represent a past I have
lived through, they recall the souvenirs of my
yesterdays....”
Philippe Weisbecker, born in 1942, was schooled in
art and graduated from Ecole Nationale Superieure
des Artes Decortifs in 1966. Since moving to New
York in 1968, Philippe has worked prolifically and
shown extensively, including at international venues
in Venice , Tokyo and Barcelona. He currently
shares his time between New York and Paris and
exhibits his work in the United States and Europe.
