Salon Dialogue

Ricco/Maresca is pleased to present their current exhibition: Salon Dialogue: Conversations with the Past and the Present, a sophisticated collection of works assembled to represent a cross-section of the gallery’s thirty year history. Individually, these works could be labeled Folk, Outsider, Self-Taught or Contemporary, but grouped in salon fashion, each has become a singular part, fitting into a new place, relating one to another in obscure yet familiar ways, acting wholly in discourse transcendent of time and category.
The exhibition encompasses the works of various artists, many of whom have lived dual lives, whether consecutively, as in the case of
Morton Bartlett, whose career in advertising design lead to what became his art transposed, or simultaneously, as with
Henry Darger, who came home every night and put to paper a fantasy world of illustrated stories, and
Christopher Adams, Dermatologist by day and creator of incredible, flora and fauna-like porcelain sculptures by night.
Hester Simpson’s intricate, vibrant circle paintings echo the meticulous layering of material in
Judith Scott’s wound fiber sculptures, and relate even more directly to the canvas Game Scroll which dates from 1920s, but has so easily become contemporary in its graphic design. Also included are objects such as a Coney Island Shooting Gallery Target and Crawling Baby Trade Figure which were once functional, but are now considered objects of art in their own right.
Ricco/Maresca encourages freedom from convention by allowing intuition and innovation to speak through the work of the artists featured in Salon Dialogue, whether living or dead, known or unknown, traditionally thought of or approached with larger scope of vision.
