Bill Henson 2006
April 27, 2006- June 3, 2006
Reception: April 27, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
524 W 26th St
The Robert Miller Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent photographs by Bill Henson. This is the artist’s second exhibition with the Robert Miller Gallery and Henson’s first exhibition since his major retrospective, which was held in 2005 at Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. Mnemosyne, a 500 page comprehensive survey of Henson’s photography, was published by Scalo to accompany his retrospective exhibition.
The works in this exhibition were made in 2005-2006. They extend Henson’s abiding interest in staging, tableau and a belief in the artifice of theatrical presentation as a profound form. Mysterious figures emerge from and merge into darkness. Shadowy landscapes are shot through with constrained light and carry vestiges of human presence. The images are at once beautiful and mysteriously intriguing, leaving the viewer to interpret what is taking place.
Bill Henson’s works are found in every major public collection in Australia and many international collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
