“I am never free of the past… I believe the past is part of the present, which becomes part of the future. I believe in continuity.” –
Lee Krasner
Robert Miller Gallery is pleased to announce PAPER, an exhibition of gouaches, pastels, and collages by
Lee Krasner.
PAPER draws inspiration from Krasner’s belief in the cyclical continuum. Throughout her career Krasner continually critiqued and reevaluated her works from the past, changed medium and recycled old drawings, paintings and prints as material for collage, folding what she gleaned into the new, both figuratively and at times, literally. The exhibition both illustrates this innovative and brave working process, and focuses on her 1969 gouache series: Seeds, Earths, Waters, and Hieroglyphs. These small scale gouache works painted on Howell papers that she had collected, exemplify Krasner’s process of revisiting past ideas within a new medium.
Lee Krasner was born in Brooklyn in 1908. She attended the Art Students League, Cooper Union, and the National Academy of Design. She also studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1945 Krasner married fellow painter, Jackson Pollock. The union had a profound and mutual influence on their respective careers.
Krasner, constantly at arms with the male dominated art world, did not gain recognition as a preeminent, first generation Abstract Expressionist until late in her life. She died in 1984 and left behind an ever growing legacy and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation.
