The
Robert Miller Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs and video works by the Italian photographer
Walter Niedermayr. This exhibition, the first by the artist in New York in seven years, is a survey of work executed between 1999 and 2006.
In this exhibition Niedermayr’s unmistakable mountain landscapes are juxtaposed with architectural subjects that range from hospital interiors, to highway over-passes, to an indoor skiing facility in Tokyo. The photographic works are presented as diptychs, triptychs, or multi-panel pieces of four or more panels whose multiple frames document shifts in time and position, discreetly expanding the limits of photographic representation. Whether the subject is a mountain landscape or an architectural subject, Niedermayr’s works present images of startling beauty and subtle complexity which invite contemplation of man’s evolving relationship to his environment.
Walter Niedermayr has gained worldwide recognition for his large scale photographs presented as multi-panel works. Civil Operations, the most recent of five monographs dedicated his work, was published by Hatje Cantz Verlag in 2003 on the occasion of a major traveling retrospective exhibition of the same name, and organized by Kunsthalle Wien. Niedermayr’s photographs have been widely exhibited internationally in both solo and group shows. He was born in 1952 in Bolzano, Italy, where he lives and works.
