Yayoi Kusama 2006
October 12, 2006- November 25, 2006
Reception: October 12, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
524 W 26th St
The
Robert Miller Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by
Yayoi Kusama.
The exhibition will consist of a variety of Infinity Net paintings, and multiples on canvas, two standing mirrored box works, a free standing Ladder to Heaven work and a selection of other installation works. Tenaciously creative and obsessive,
Yayoi Kusama continues to create artworks wrested from her stream of consciousness. These pieces speak to her past and continue the themes she began in the 1960’s.
Yayoi Kusama was born in Japan in 1929. As a child, she suffered from hallucinations of nets, dots and flowers that appeared to cover every inch of space and threatened to obliterate her. The hallucinations left an indelible impact on the artist, and the imagery from the period still manifests itself in her work. Essentially self-taught and fiercely determined to be an artist since her childhood,
Yayoi Kusama arrived in the United States in 1957 at the age of 28. She rapidly established herself among the New York avant-garde and gained international attention during the 1960s with her paintings, sculpture, installations, poems and novels, performances and film. Her powerful presence during this period has been an influence and inspiration for subsequent generations of artists. In the late 1960s Kusama created a series of nude performances staged throughout the city for which she developed an infamous reputation. Her work from this period is seen as an important precursor of both Minimalism and the Body Art movement.
Kusama is the winner of the 18th annual Praemium Imperiale award for painting, and will be presented with the award in Tokyo on October 18, 2006. She has exhibited in hundreds of galleries and museums around the world during her extraordinary career. Her works are included in private, public and museum collections worldwide. Kusama currently maintains a studio in Tokyo.
Art Reviews of Yayoi Kusama 2006
New York Times November 17, 2006 | | Roberta Smith | | "At 77, Yayoi Kusama is doing what she wants artistically, which is probably too much. With 54 works dating mostly from 2005 and ’06, her latest exhibition can resemble a group show of younger artists in the thrall of her multimedia capriciousness...." |
Village Voice October 19, 2006 | | R.C. Baker | | "...She has a history of hallucinations and stints in mental hospitals but has always continued working, and pieces like The Passing of Winter continue her obsessions: a box tiled with mirrors inside and out is pierced with cut-out circles; look inside and your reflection is bounced around a dizzying matrix of suspended and fallen reflective balls...." |
