Robert Steele Gallery is proud to present an exhibition by
Jeff Lowe which includes selected works from his recent series of forty cast iron panels and associated drawings.
These works, made in wood with routered line marks and then cast in iron, continue Lowe's interest in the area between drawing and sculpture.
Using a process, which invites 'accident' and 'surprise' from a reversal of negative and positive, these works have an immediacy and freshness which comes from not being totally in control of the 'end result'. They are made quickly, directly and intuitively (from eye to hand) trying hard not to be distracted by the head, which could stifle and inhibit. Working away from the fashionable trend of conceptual art, Lowe makes sculpture which needs to be observed, experienced with the 'eye', which cannot be analyzed or understood in a literal way. Magical objects, much like the African art that Lowe collects and holds in high regard, they function when being looked at.
Lowe works in an impressive 10,000 sq ft studio in South Bermondsey and has produced a remarkable body of work some on a massive scale.
Lowe studied at St Martins School of Art and had his first one man show at the age of twenty-one at the prestigious Leicester Galleries in Cork St. He has shown at the Hayward Gallery, Serpentine Gallery as well as the Paris Biennale. He has had many solo exhibitions in London, Portugal, Amsterdam, Australia and New York. This will be his second solo exhibition in New York. Lowe divides his time between his studios in London and southern Portugal where he has built a house and studio.
