"Sight Lines," a solo exhibition of the work of painter
Anne Raymond opens at the
Robert Steele Gallery in Manhattan on May 13th.
Raymond approaches each painting as a window with sight lines – implying vastness and space beyond the edges of the canvas – as if nature is being viewed through a window with serenity at its core. “My work has a center free of restlessness. The wild energy and abandon of drawing - marks and lines - around this center accentuate its serenity. The center of space expresses a seeking of light – and a seeking to return light into an object. There is a volume implied by the linear quality of calligraphic and sinuous drawing.”
In this new body of work Raymond has reconsidered the importance of painting with oils – in the same way a watercolorist approaches paper – from light to dark. “This was a turning point in being able to communicate the luminosity that I so deeply desired. The surfaces are complex and I have worked very hard to harness the refracted light from the surface of the canvas”. Thoughts of Turner or of Joan Mitchell may come to mind, as these paintings reveal emotional storms and quiet depths of passion, very much landscapes of the soul.
”
Anne Raymond uses energy as content in paintings that pulsate with vigorous drawing gestures, reminding us that such direct gestures can take on new meaning in an era of technologically assisted marks,” wrote art critic Phyllis Braff. “Often there is a psychological identification with nature, or with the seasons, and the tension between the subjective and the objective can generate added force.”
“Sight Lines” marks Raymond’s first solo exhibition in New York City. It will include 12 paintings and 12 works on paper, including monotypes.
Her work has been featured in exhibitions in galleries throughout the United States. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions at museums and galleries, including at the Islip Art Museum in Islip, New York and the Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton.
Ms. Raymond’s work is in the permanent collections of major museums including those of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin. Her work is found as well in the collections of many leading firms including Pfizer, Inc.; United Airlines; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; Colgate Palmolive Company; Nuveen Securities; Saks Fifth Avenue; Goldman, Sachs & Co.; and Bellagio Hotel and Resort.
“Sight Lines” opens on May 13th and runs through June 7th, 2008. A reception will be held on Thursday, May 15th from 6 to 8 pm: the artist will be present. Also on view in the gallery’s Project Room will be “Adrift” by Susu Pianchupattana.
