The art auction will help support the launch of exalt youth*, a new nonprofit that serves New York City’s most disconnected adolescents through a comprehensive internship program linking education, meaningful employment, and mentorship. Nathaniel Mary Quinn is graciously donating ten pieces to be auctioned at the event. Quinn’s work explores the synthesis of black male urban masculinity
and subconscious femininity. Quinn has recently shown at Russell Simmons’ Annual Art for Life Hamptons Benefit, and his work is currently showing in a solo exhibition at Steele Life Gallery in Chicago.
Event hosted by Tony Award-Winning Actor and Poet Lemon
Music by DJ Lynnee Denise and DJ Reborn
exalt equips youth along the spectrum of criminal justice involvement risk with the skills and experience necessary to take concrete steps towards becoming self-sufficient, self-fulfilled, productive members of society.
exalt partners with schools and criminal justice agencies to provide youth ages 15-20, both in and outside of the criminal justice system, an intensive, year long program with four components: employment readiness and life skills training; paid internships in youths’ fields of interest; post-internship services; and an alumni network that provides ongoing access to career development and other resources for years after program completion. Participation in exalt will decrease a young person’s chance of recidivating by 93%. 90% of youth who complete exalt will continue pursuing their education and 70% will be employed within a year.
exalt is based on Founder Sonja Okun’s work designing and managing a similar award-winning internship program for court-involved youth at one of New York’s largest alternative to incarceration agencies. Having heard for years from the youth served by that program, “why do you have to get locked up to get this program?” Ms. Okun determined that her next step would utilize her 15 years of experience, skills and Harvard MBA, to create a more accessible initiative that could both prevent criminal justice involvement and contribute on a greater scale to reversing the trend of a growing undereducated, unemployed generation of youth.
