Artist
John Sims presents his film in progress Recoloration Proclamation - A Video Diary at
Rush Arts Gallery + Resource Center in New York City. This series of short films that document the artist’s response to the Confederate Flag and the reactions from the communities in Harlem, Gettysburg, and Sarasota. The film centers around the piece, The Proper Way to Hang a Confederate Flag, which caused a national outcry within the South Heritage movement when shown in Gettysburg in 2004. This film captures the complexity of these responses and the counter-intuitive dynamics that frame the confederate flag around issues of race, visual politics and Southern Heritage. The film features commentary and contributions by Amiri Baraka, Karen Finley, Dread Scott and DJ Spooky.
In 2000, artist
John Sims first presented his black, red and green confederate flag at DFN Gallery in Soho beginning the Recoloration Proclamation, a multi-disciplinary project that engages the controversial elements of Southern Heritage. Since 2000, Sims has taken elements of this work to KKK rallies, Harlem, Atlanta, Sarasota and most notably Gettysburg, where his exhibition, Recoloration Proclamation: The Gettysburg Redress at Gettysburg College stirred national controversy with the installation The Proper Way to Hang a Confederate Flag. Originally the work was conceived as an outdoor piece of a confederate flag hanging from a 13-foot gallows. Even before the opening date, the exhibition generated thousands of emails, death threats and a campaign by the Sons of Confederate Veterans to boycott the city of Gettysburg. The College forced the work indoors, resulting in a smaller version. In protest of the College’s decision the artist boycotted his own opening.
