OPENING RECEPTION & BOOK LAUNCH: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 6 - 8 P.M.

International Inc. is honored to present a solo exhibition of works by photographer Ketaki Sheth, entitled Bombay Mix.  The exhibition will feature approximately 50 of Ketaki Sheth’s photographs of Bombay (now known as Mumbai) taken between 1988 and 2004.

Dense with the movement and activity which epitomizes daily life in Bombay, these images are the subject matter of a forthcoming monograph: Bombay Mix – Street Photographs by Ketaki Sheth (Dewi Lewis/Sepia International, 2007).  This will be Sheth’s second publication after her much praised Twinspotting (Dewi Lewis, 1999).  Bombay Mix features 75 photographs reproduced in tri-tone, with texts by Suketu Mehta, author of Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found, acclaimed writer Salman Rushdie, and film maker Mira Nair.

Bombay is a city that never sleeps.  Its population (17.7 million in 2007) and linear geography puts a premium on space. A lot of ‘living’ happens on the street.  The book is called Bombay Mix after a savory snack.  Each crunchy, spicy grain of the ‘mix’ lingers in the taste buds, much like Bombay’s street life, where a disparate and unlikely blend of humanity defines its boundaries in a tightly confined space. —Ketaki Sheth

Born in Bombay in 1957, Ketaki Sheth received her B.A. in English Literature from Elphinstone College, Bombay University in 1977 and was awarded a Master’s degree in Communication Arts from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York in 1980.  Sheth began taking street pictures of Bombay in the late ‘80s under the informal mentorship of Raghubir Singh, the renowned Indian photographer.  His frequent visits to her parents’ home in Bombay were filled with intense discussions on photography: books, critics, curators, exhibitions, film, cameras, photographers.  She has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally since 1988, including Century City:  Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis at the Tate Modern, London in 2001.  Among her awards are The Sanskriti Award for Indian Photography presented in 1993, and most recently, the Higashikawa Award for Photography in 2006.
