Alex Webb
Eyüp (2001)
Sepia International is honored to present Alex Webb: Istanbul. The exhibition will feature color photographs selected from Istanbul: City of a Hundred Names (Aperture, 2007), his seventh and most recent monograph. Webb’s intrinsic ability to fuse color, gesture, and visual nuance in cultural intersections around the world finds a compelling study in Istanbul.

For thirty-some years as a photographer I have been intrigued by borders, places where cultures come together, sometimes easily, sometimes roughly. -- Alex Webb

Alex Webb first visited Istanbul in 1998 and was immediately taken by the richness of both its traditions and its contradictions, and has returned whenever possible. This body of work conveys the densely layered complexity and energy of the only major city that straddles two continents--Europe and Asia.

Webb thinks of the picture as a field whose energies reach out to every perimeter, and he thinks of himself as an organism embroiled in--not detached from--those energies. -- Max Kozloff, Art in America

Alex Webb was born in 1952, San Francisco, and now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. An active photographer from an early age, he joined Magnum Photos in 1976. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007, along with several major photography grants and awards, he has had numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe, Canada, and the U.S. His work is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and numerous other institutions and museums.
