SEPIA International is pleased to present a group exhibition entitled Namesake / Inspiration, based on the new film The Namesake by acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and on the novel of the same name by award-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri.

Nair states, “If it weren't for photography, I wouldn't be a filmmaker.” Photographs by Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Mitch Epstein, Derry Moore, and Raghubir Singh amongst others, served as the initial inspiration and visual springboard for the film. In using these as formal and stylistic markers, the film charts the movements and crossings of the Ganguli family from Calcutta, India, to the East Coast of the United States. Echoing the prevalent immigrant experience in America, the family members find themselves living between two worlds. This 'in between-ness' lies at the heart of the novel, the film, and this exhibition.

With each new interpretation comes a different aesthetic; just as the film adopts and adapts features of the novel, the exhibition also presents a varied arrangement. Central themes explored include the transposition of identity, negotiating difference, confronting tradition, and the nomadism of contemporary life. Photographers Adam Bartos, Alison Bradley, Saul Leiter, Osamu James Nakagawa, Yukio Oyama, and Pamela Singh offer images of displacement and anonymity, introspection and quietude, situated within throng-filled streets, urban views, and suburban landscapes, each emphasizing these dilemmas.

Cinematographer Fred Elmes, Dayanita Singh, and Mira Nair herself, contribute to the exhibition with photographs taken during filming. Interleaving their work with the common experiences depicted in the film pushes the question often raised within photography, “what is real and what is constructed for our belief?” Fact and fiction coalesce as each new representation inhabits a different realm. With the narrative of the novel and the film serving as the common thread, the selection of photographs in this exhibition offer evocative, open-ended vignettes for viewers to experience for themselves.

This exhibition coincides with the international release of The Namesake, a Fox Searchlight production, in theaters on March 6, 2007.
