S H A G is pleased to present the new works of
Jaeran Won. Having appeared in solo exhibitions in New York, London, UK, and Seoul, Korea; Won has built quite the international profile. Her studies in fine art took place in Seoul where she received her B.F.A. in 1998 and M.F.A. in 2001 from Seoul National University of Technology in the School of Fine Art. After completing her education in Korea, Won moved to London, UK and has since been residing there.
Although Won's paintings have a fun visual appeal with a pastel palette and an ugly-but-cute character, her work is far from lighthearted. Won's works feature female figures in various situations that convey her discontent with the male-dominated society. She brings a unique master-slave relationship to the forefront in her work. The paintings describe the emptiness of human beings by conveying them as dolls without thoughts. Currently, her paintings show these dolls in their daily life of ordinary emptiness. Jaeran describes her doll as such, "The character itself has only eyes on her face and legs of different sizes, which can never add up. Her alter-ego is unable to think because she's not allowed to do so by the master (which is me, the artist). I chose not to paint a beautiful character but a rather ugly and strange one, someone you would ignore or reject." Her works have recently been chosen to be featured in the London Underground train platforms in June (the Kennington Street Northern Line, Platform 3).
