SOHO20 Chelsea, a distinguished New York all-women's gallery since 1973, presents the
annual exhibit of its “National Affiliates” Show .
SOHO20’s National Affiliates, a far-flung group of women artists, is drawn from all regions
of this country and other national capitals and cultures. Its members represent a broad
spectrum of artistic careers outside New York. They include artist-educators, academics, arts
advocates, and artist-curators. Always individual in their approaches and agendas, their bond
as established women artists gives focus to their annual exhibitions. The national Affiliates
group is dedicated to a collaborative exhibition process, supporting each other professionally,
and providing structure, continuity, and feedback to stimulate innovative thinking about their
work. Their model of cooperative artistic dialogue reaches out to women visual and
conceptual artists around the world.
In this exhibit, eleven artists from the United States and Japan explore the impact of gender
on boundaries of self and relationships to community. Their works comprise a wide stylistic
range of digital media, sculpture and installation, photography, print, painting, drawing, fiber
and mixed media. Their personal descriptions reflect common concerns and a diversity of
methods:
“
Karen Baldner's recent drawings on handmade paper explore the space between absence
and presence as an experience of potential and suspense.”
“
B. Amore, a sculptor using alternative photo processes, text and mixed media, will show
work which explores memory and journey.”
“
Gail Hoffman's very small installations of plastic, bronze and video evoke a bemused sense of
place in a world out of time.”
“
Elizabeth Michelman’s installation of ink works on paper, from her award-winning ‘First
Person Series,’ multiplies the letter ‘I’ traced from a steel I-beam to construct a symbolic
architecture of the self.”
“
Ann Rowles, a mixed-media sculptor, will exhibit two crocheted works based on the
experience of caring for her elderly mother.”
“
Georgia Strange shows invented sentinels that deal with each day's imperfection, from her
“Guardian Series.”
“
Virginia Tyler makes installations that show the heavy work that girls in Ghana have to do if
they do not get an education.”
“
Mary Whalen presents her current work photographing young wrestlers, utilizing 19th century
printing techniques.”
“
Eve Whitaker's work this year comes from her Creaking Cart Series’ of graphite drawings, in
response to the experience of caring for an elderly parent.”
“
Rosie G. Thompson, a mixed media sculptor from NC, will exhibit constructions dealing with
reconciliation.”
