In her first solo show at
SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery,
Denise Yaghmourian presents a series of sculptural boxes. She works with found objects, and remnants of wood, sewing materials, and everyday objects. " I have a deep interest in the repetitious process involved in machine made items, and combining them with handmade work. There is something hypnotic and meditative, to me, in combining the two." The artist enjoys scavenging through notion and fabric stores, thrift shops and toy stores. The work is intended to entice the viewer to step closer, possibly relate to the objects in some way and see them in a different light.
This series of work is inspired by Yaghmourianıs interest in combining machine made materials with hand made. The pieces are primarily black and white and utilize the box or cube as the most basic sculptural form. Hook and eye tape, typically used in bra and corset making, is combined with hand-sewn patterns. The artist fell in love with the beauty and simplicity of hook and eye tape and has since been experimenting with its possibilities in her work. The hook and eye tape becomes the canvas on which Yaghmourian creates detailed patterns with thread.
Denise Yaghmourian studied art at Arizona State University, and works as a full time artist. She has exhibited her work at The Tucson Museum of Art Biennial, The Phoenix Art Museum, Fala Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, Ceres.
