Kathy Stark's first solo exhibit at SOHO20, the artist presents mixed media monochromatic white works on birch panels using a grid structure and linear motif. Her work focuses on the manipulation of the painting surface through the use of a wide range of material, creating a sense of illusion and depth. The elements of color, light, and pattern are the formal building blocks of her work. Layers of paint are applied, scraped, crackled, combed, and reapplied. Colored pencils, oil sticks, collage elements, and china markers are used to add subtle color and hue to enhance the overall pattern.
Using an implement she designed, Stark has pushed her exploration of the repeat line motif through various phases. Her paintings have evolved from early works on canvas using an intensely color saturated palette to this current body of work employing a limited color selection.
Kathy Stark's intuitive personal style combines an interplay and juxtaposition of subtle hues to evoke a rhythmic and modulating surface.
". . . about my creative process - I couldn't explain it to you. And even if I could, why would I want to? Are there people who really wish to explain themselves?"
