In Patricia Berube's third solo show at
SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery, "Recent Works on Paper", the artist revisits the theme of motherhood through a series of drawings and mono prints of the depleted machinery of a woman's post-partum body.
In these expressionistic, semi abstract pieces, Berube isolates the torso, emphasizing the idea of a woman's body as an engine of creation. At once elegant and grotesque, the series serves as a mournful elegy on loss and deterioration. Patricia Berube will be presenting seven large scale drawings using paint and black conte, and four smaller mono prints.
Soon after her birth in St. Louis, Missouri in 1963, Berube's family moved to Massachusetts where she grew up. She received her B.A. in Painting at Syracuse University in 1986. Subsequently, she moved to New York City where she worked at the Museum of Modern Art while studying Art Education at Columbia University, where she received a degree of Master of Arts in 1993. After her own children were born, Berube became a surrogate mother and carried her sister's baby girl. She has since moved to Massachusetts where she now lives with her husband and three children. This is her third solo show at SOHO20, CHELSEA.
