School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Dreamscapes,” an exhibition of work by three current BFA Fine Arts Department students, exploring the role of the unconscious in improvisation. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries, the artists include
James Farias,
Toby Klinger and
Michaela Murphy. The exhibition will be on view January 13 – February 10 at the Westside Gallery, 141 West 21st Street, New York City.
James Farias’ surreal landscape paintings combine improvisation, calculation and revision. Working spontaneously, Farias contrasts impulsive brushwork with detailed line to create biomorphic figures that hybridize abstraction and figuration.
Toby Klinger’s deceptively simple works on clayboard boxes are inspired by a 1960s children’s encyclopedia set. Combining printed text on illustrative acrylic paintings, the artist uses a familiar template to tell contemporary, autobiographical tales.
Silhouette and the sewn line are the primary elements in
Michaela Murphy’s sophisticated silkscreen prints. The graphic simplicity of her autobiographical imagery reinforces the subtle gender issues the artist addresses.
