School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Kinaesthetics,” an exhibition of video art by SVA students, featuring various approaches to the production and presentation of time-based works. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries, the artists include
Si Jae Byun,
Hadassa Goldvicht,
Barbara Bulletti Newman and
Kristin Skibinski.
Si Jae Byun’s video installation Journeying Sperm depicts the eternal quest of sperm seeking their destiny. Byun projects her video onto a large balloon that continually inflates and deflates, creating a whimsical commentary on nature’s reproductive urge. Byun is a current student in the MFA Fine Arts Department.
Hadassa Goldvicht’s Stones consists of three screens, each respectively representing seconds, minutes and hours. On each screen a hand repeatedly places a single stone down for each fragment of time. The work becomes a physical clock, visually capturing the passage of time. The three screens eventually lose their synchronization, and the seconds, minutes and hours slowly drift apart from one another, emphasizing the human over the scientific. Goldvicht is a current student in the MFA Fine Arts Department.
Barbara Bulletti Newman’s projection L’Atlalena is part of an investigation of the forgotten spaces of urban landscape. The work documents a public art performance featuring a woman swinging in the negative space between two city buildings. By focusing on this overlooked space the artist subtly expands our perception of everyday experience. Bulletti Newman is a current student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.
Kristin Skibinski’s triptych Eggz examines the creative process. The three-channel video chronicles the path from generating new ideas through to conflicts, compromise and eventual resolution. The video cycles from black-and-white to color, symbolizing the clarity and confusion implicit in creativity. Skibinski is a current student in the MFA Computer Art Department.
