Reception: August 1, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Visual Arts Gallery: 601 W 26th St
School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Postpartum,” an exhibition of photography and video work by three recent MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department graduates. The artists’ works aspire to understand the mysteries of human interaction, whether by examining intimate friendships, exploring the religious traditions that are a part of one's life or considering a complex relationship. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries, the artists include
Carolyn Mara Borlenghi,
Margot Herster and
Rachel Rabhan.
Carolyn Mara Borlenghi's video installation, presented on three hanging screens, considers intimacy in a relationship, primarily the quiet rituals of a couple. Using herself and her husband as subjects, Borlenghi involves the viewer in the couple’s private events, creating a voyeuristic tension.
Margot Herster's color photographs show something she claims not to have - a best-friend relationship with another woman. Captured during fleeting moments, her images subtly portray internalized social norms of femininity and the dynamics that govern friendship. In her black-and-white photographs,
Rachel Rabhan explores the relevance of Bible stories in contemporary times through the lives of her students at Ramaz, a Yeshiva in New York City. Through a collaborative process with students as models, her images reanimate stories that are the essence of the Jewish community and metaphors for the everyday experiences of adolescents.
