School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents, “The Book Show,” an exhibition of books created
by 17 MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department students. The exhibition will be on view from November 27 – December 16, at the Visual Arts Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, 15th floor,
New York City.
Each year, first-year students in the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department develop a book based on their personal vision. The form of the book can be a graphic novel, visual essay, illustrated song, historical text or an illustrated children’s book. These one-of-a-kind books are bound and exhibited along with the original work from the book, presenting an unfiltered look at each student’s process.
Nivi Alroy’s book describes the journey of a girl, born in a famous cactus-tree community. She is traveling in search of something she cannot seem to remember. Throughout the search she enters into other people’s memories until she discovers what she chose to forget. The story is based on answers to three questions—where is your home, what is your strongest childhood memory and do you plan on ever going back there?
Kripa Joshi’s book Limited Space deals with the experience of living in a big city like New York—tiny apartments, crowded subways, waiting in long lines and disappearing into a sea of people. The book is based on idioms such as “packed like sardines,” “rat race” and “busy as a bee.”
Yanni Kim’s book is about a girl who commutes to the city on a bus. She encounters a nameless cat, who then appears everywhere she goes.
Tao Nyeu’s book is based on a story of a man’s quest to find his missing mustache.
Anka Pinczer illustrates random objects such as coins, MetroCards, business cards, stones, dried plants or laundry clips, all of which are found in her character Oskar’s drawer. The items were collected after Oskar left Poland and started his adult life in New York. The objects store memories and images from the past 10 years, forming a picture of Oskar’s life, personality and moods.
Andres Vera’s graphic novel, entitled Borderline, tells the story of Salvador Rodríguez-Rodríguez, a naïve illegal immigrant from the ranches of Mexico. He awakens from a vivid nightmare in a New Mexico hotel to find a gruesome scar running across the back of his head from one ear to the other. He also finds a strange woman shooting up heroin in the hotel bathroom… and that is only the beginning.
