School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “The Early Work,” an exhibition that brings together selected thesis projects from recent graduates in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department, curated by faculty member Marvin Heiferman.

According to Heiferman, some artists in their early work consider ideas and images that are already freely circulating. The students in this exhibition have considered these outward influences but also have looked inward, to explore what seems to be more urgent and authentic in themselves. Centering on themes such as curiosity, misconnection, emotion, identity, persistence and a desire for peace and beauty, the images were selected from larger bodies of work in order to present a summary of the students’ work in the past two years.

From documentary and conceptualized photographic practice to video installations, the work covers a wide range of styles and media. Jeongmee Yoon’s photographs address gender identity, confronting the relationship boys and girls have with the colors blue and pink. Her meticulous, yet highly-detailed images show elaborately arranged rooms housing the toys associated with each respective male or female owner. Amy Stein’s work documents American highways, presenting photos of broken down cars on the side of the road and offering a timely look and metaphor for a crippled America. Tania Fernandez and Rachel Feierman's large color photographs reflect two different perspectives on teenage youth. Fernandez captures images of privileged Puerto Ricans attending the Academy of Refinement, a kind of finishing school for traditional female upbringing, intent on the endowment of beauty. In contrast, Feierman’s images display a parking lot as a meeting place for teenage youth who are bored and caught in the humdrum of suburbia.
