A series of four exhibitions showcasing works by BFA Fine Arts Department students, curated by Jeanne Siegel, Tim Rollins, Gary Simmons and Gary Sherman.
A note by curator Jeanne Siegel:
What is still particularly true of fine art work that emerges from SVA every year is that it’s new. Students find a way to distinguish themselves from others by a particular approach to life and by transforming the world into a work. This happens because each group of emerging artists experiences the world from a new time and place perspective. New York is still the center of the art world and our SVA students have had a special education as a result.
Emerging artists at SVA are predominantly encouraged to find their own discoveries—what they feel is real and valuable to show the world. This may result in a number of different attitudes, from reflecting totally personal ideas of living in New York, relating to their culture or absorbing globalized ideas and forms circulating in New York as well. We are open to all. The development of computer art which has affected fine art has been important—offering a starting point that can change the look of the art. New York is aware of technology.
A new trend has surfaced—individual new works have become hybridized and students are reflecting this in their recent work.
In the main gallery space, the fine arts work varies widely in formal materials—paintings, drawings, collage, sculpture, fabric. Content is diverse; it references religion, architectural forms, more subtle new bodies, new portraits, shaping and positioning, graffiti on sculpture.
In the three project rooms, the thematic approach initiated last year has become more complex, featuring “Realpolitic” curated by Tim Rollins, Gary Simmons’ exhibition on racial views and “Video Wit” curated by Gary Sherman. Statements about these shows are posted at the entrance to the project rooms.
Jeanne Siegel is the chair emeritus of the BFA Fine Arts Department.
