In today’s overheated art market, what does a million dollars buy? For the 16 young artists in an upcoming exhibition at School of Visual Arts (SVA) curated by João Ribas, the answer is, professional credentials.
“$960,000+,” as the exhibition is entitled, refers to the combined living and educational expenses of the participating artists, estimated at $60,000 per person. This is the second installment of an annual thesis exhibition presented by the MFA Fine Arts Department at SVA, which will include drawing, painting, video, animation and site-specific installations. The title is meant to call attention to the economics of making and distributing art in the global marketplace—from earning an advanced degree to showing and selling work.
The artists in “$960,000+” have set up a blog that goes behind the scenes at their studios as they prepare for the exhibition,
http://960000.blogspot.com/. For example, Mike Egan has posted quotations from Princess Diana (“I wear my heart on my sleeve”) and Chairman Mao (“Criticism is an act of love)” alongside a painting he made in collaboration with classmate
Ryan Sullivan. “Is it an exercise or is it a finished work of art?” asks another classmate in response. Like a crit session that is open to the public, the blog includes the artists’ and curator’s comments on recent work—work that may never leave the studio.
João Ribas is the newly appointed curator of contemporary exhibitions at The Drawing Center. He has curated several shows in the U.S. and abroad and written on art, film, and literature for The New York Sun, Time Out New York, PAPER, ARTnews, Art + Auction and other publications.
