Sara Tecchia Roma New York is proud to present the world premiere of "BREATHE DEEP NYC NO CHARGE," a video by RICHARD P. RUBINSTEIN.

In September of 1972, Gordon Matta-Clark along with Ed Baynard, Ted Greenwald, Jan Hodenfield, Peter Levy and Ginger J. Walker took a cart made by Matta-Clark loaded with canisters of "fresh air." People were offered to try the fresh air free of charge.

RICHARD P. RUBINSTEIN was there with the first generation of handheld Sony video cameras to document the event. During this time (1970-1973), Rubinstein shuttled back and forth between New York City and the expatriate artist colony in Ibiza, Spain. Influenced by Fred Friendly and Marshall McLuhan, he began taping.

"I had a strong interest in documentary still photography, particularly the Polaroid camera's capacity for instant gratification," explains Rubinstein. "When Sony put the first "portable" home video camera/recorder unit on the market in 1969, I was one of the first in line to buy one. The result was my focused interest in taking television as I then knew it out of the hands of the "establishment" and into the hands of the people. Prior to the Sony unit's availability, people could only watch television, not make it. I admit to co-opting McLuhan's description of television as the ultimate mirror of society as the name of my first company, The Ultimate Mirror Ltd. "

Rubinstein was born in 1947 in Brooklyn, New York and still lives in NYC. Mr. Rubinstein holds an MBA from Columbia University and has had a long successful public career as a producer of feature films and miniseries. His producing credits include the feature films "George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead" and "Stephen King's Pet Sematary," the miniseries "Stephen King's The Stand" and "Frank Herbert's Dune," and the TV movie "The Vernon Johns Story" starring James Earl Jones. (A complete credit list may be found at www.newamsterdamnyc.com)

The video is 16 minutes in duration. It will be screened every hour, on the hour.

Proceeds from sales of the limited edition DVD will be donated to NYC-based non-profit organization, Chashama. One of Chashama's principal activities is matching up artists with unused space for studio or performance use that is being made available from major NYC real estate companies. Art Reviews of BREATHE DEEP NYC NO CHARGE

New York Times
May 19, 2006
Roberta Smith"...The result resembles a low-key spontaneous Happening, or perhaps an early instance of what is sometimes called relational aesthetics or service art as later practiced by artists like Rirkrit Tiravanija and Pierre Huyghe. But the strong sense of a bygone New York -- blurry, gray and ready for anything -- relates Mr. Rubinstein's video to street photography as much as to cutting-edge art...."
